Backpack Buddies Update |
|
Our Backpack Buddies
Spring Break project for Kessler School was a huge success!
With our club’s donations of food and money, we were able to
pack 115 large bags of food with enough items in each to last each
child in the program three to four days. We also
packed approximately 50 more bags with a two-day supply of food
which will be delivered later in the week by someone on the school
staff, to the most needy children.
Charlotte Grosz, the
project chairman, wants to extend a big “Thank You” to everyone who
helped in some way with this project, and especially to her
assistant, Charlotte Balint, the ladies who helped pack the bags on
Monday, March 22nd, (Edith Uthmann, Char Falsetto, Karen
Dennis, Cheryl Hendrickson, Pat Gurrad and Judy Kirby) and to
Patricia Bosh and Char Falsetto, who helped hand out the bags on
Friday, March 26th.
As most of you already know, Cowlitz Credit
Union has been collecting food and money for this program for
several years, and now Cowlitz BANK has joined in collecting
donations and money for Backpack Buddies. They
are working closely with Charlotte Grosz, who is hoping to entice
other businesses in town to help out. Other
schools in our area really need help in either establishing a
program like this, or need the help to continue the program that
they already have. Thanks to Altrusa of
Longview-Kelso, Kessler School is becoming a model for the other
low-income schools in the area!

Students' book drive turns up surprise ending |

Teens collect 2259
books for Celebration of Literacy |

Three Mark Morris seniors conducted a book drive
resulting in 2259
books in time for this year’s Celebration of
Literacy Week
which is
February 28 - March 6, 2010.
Megan
Arnett, Courtney Teeters, and Porsche Yates came up with
the idea for their marketing class project.
“We
wanted to do something that would make a difference and
that could be measured,” said Arnett. Their goal was
1000 books. “It was fun to do, and it was
|
|
|
exciting to
see we doubled our goal!”
All three students are avid readers and Megan is a fan of Jodi
Picoult's books. |
|
|
They conducted the book drive primarily at
Columbia
Valley
Gardens
Elementary School
over one week’s time. Over 1700
books came from
CVG
students.
The
three chose
CVG
because that had been their elementary school. In a school assembly,
they challenged the students to collect books for the book drive.
The winning class was Mr.
Welsh's class, who
brought in 500 books. For a prize, the class was treated to ice
cream sundaes.
Another alumna of
CVG
is the chair of this year's Celebration of Literacy Week, Ilona
Kerby.
"I'm amazed at the
number of books Megan, Porsche and Courtney collected! This is a
wonderful community service project they chose and we are thankful
for their successful drive, "said Ilona.
The books will now be sorted by Altrusa
International and then distributed to various groups and
organizations throughout the community, said Kerby. “We deliver
books to a
number of locations such as the
Emergency Support Shelter, DAPC (Drug
& Alcohol
Prevention
Center),
to the jail, as well as to classrooms and libraries.”
The local Altrusa Club will be purchasing new
books to distribute at
all the events during Celebration of Literacy Week.
Mark Morris
senior Megan Arnett and Ilona Kerby prepare to distribute books
collected by Arnett and fellow seniors Courtney Teeters and
Porsche Yates for this year’s Celebration of Literacy Week.

Celebration
of Literacy |
|
|
After Altrusa International adopted a focus on
Literacy in 2001 the Longview-Kelso club decided to spearhead a
community wide Celebration of Literacy Week.
With a committee of Altrusans and other
community members we continue planning for our Annual Celebration of
Literacy. |
|
| |
|
|
During the week the
2,000+ books purchased and donated will be given away at schools,
shelters, community literacy events, and the jail. Anyone interested
in volunteering for the Celebration may do so by emailing
Ilona Kerby. |
