Altrusa International of Hermiston
Recognizes Local Young Citizen of the Year
Hermiston High received the Altrusa Young Citizen of the Year Award at the Hermiston Distinguished Services Banquet in January from President Janet Cooley. This award is given annually to an outstanding young person for their contributions of community service in the local community during the past year.

Catherine is an active member of Key Club, helps with food drives at school, and regularly participates with Spanish classes delivering food and gifts to needy families. She has worked to arrange performances for Majazzty at several community events and selected and performed appropriate music for Vange John Hospice Annual Memorial Service. Catherine is also regularly requested to sing the National Anthem at various community functions. As the daughter of Altrusan Susan (Jerry) Callahan she has participated at Altrusa sponsored events, such as Relay for Life and Girls Night In.

As a student, Catherine participates in many extra-curricular activities. Drama—she has performed in the past five high school plays, three with lead parts. Most notably was Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, the musical lead. Catherine also has been participating in two honors choirs, Majazzty and Con Brio, which are by-audition only, and require many performances outside of school.

Catherine currently maintains a 4.0 GPA and is ranked #1 of 351 students in her junior class.  Catherine is dual-enrolled at BMCC through several advanced classes. Further, she will have met all requirements for an Honors Diploma by the end of this school year, as a junior.

Department of Human Services Visitation Rooms project
This project was taking 2 visitation rooms that are used when children who have been removed from their home have supervised visitation with their parents. The rooms were dismal and the furniture was ready for the dump. Our Community Service Co Chairs and their committee started to work and got the entire membership involved in some part of the project. We had 2 members who did the base painting of the garden room and then 2 other member who blew us away with the painting they did freehand. The new couches were donated by a furniture store in town and the glider rockers were given to us at cost. We had the big storage unit in the "education" room -the bright colored room-built and all new toys, books, rugs, changing stations, tables, lamps and more were put in each room. The employees of DHS have been overwhelmed with the transformation and they say the families that have used it so far are very excited. Hopefully it has made a difference in a difficult situation.

Girls Night In
Girls Night In is a special evening even that gives 8th grade girls from the 2 Hermiston middles schools an opportunity to get acquainted with each other, meet high school leadership girls, tour the high school and so much more.  Altrusa members, high school leadership girls and individuals from the community, provide a safe, fun evening that will make the transition to high school in the fall easier.  There are stations the girls rotate through such as learning cheers with the high school cheerleaders, beading, scrapbooking, skin care and more. Door prizes are given to each girl and 2 MP3 players were given away. This year’s GNI was held April 3, 2009.
