Department of Human Services
Visitation Rooms project |
| This project was
taking 2 visitation rooms that are used when children who have been
removed from their home have supervised visitation with their
parents. The rooms were dismal and the furniture was ready for the
dump. Our Community Service Co Chairs and their committee started to
work and got the entire membership involved in some part of the
project. We had 2 members who did the base painting of the garden
room and then 2 other member who blew us away with the painting they
did freehand. The new couches were donated by a furniture store in
town and the glider rockers were given to us at cost. We had the big
storage unit in the "education" room -the bright colored room-built
and all new toys, books, rugs, changing stations, tables, lamps and
more were put in each room. The employees of DHS have been
overwhelmed with the transformation and they say the families that
have used it so far are very excited. Hopefully it has made a
difference in a difficult situation. |

| Girls Night In |
|
Girls Night In is a special evening even that gives 8th
grade girls from the 2 Hermiston middles schools an
opportunity to get acquainted with each other, meet high
school leadership girls, tour the high school and so much
more. Altrusa members, high school leadership girls and
individuals from the community, provide a safe, fun evening
that will make the transition to high school in the fall
easier. There are stations the girls rotate through such as
learning cheers with the high school cheerleaders, beading,
scrapbooking, skin care and more. Door prizes are given to
each girl and 2 MP3 players were given away. This year’s GNI
